Our Program

  • Kindergarten is considered “Early Years” in a Charlotte Mason program with no formal lessons. Our Kindergarten class explores nature, geography, music, as well as some early learning in reading and math. They also get exposure to being in a classroom setting to help prepare them for the formal years.
  • Our elementary program is divided into Early Elementary (grades 1-3) and Upper Elementary (grades 4-6). Students have the option of attending one or both days of the program. In the elementary program, students complete lessons both at home and at LEA for the week. A suggested program for home lessons is provided to help parents in their planning if they wish to implement it. Book recommendations can also be given at the parent’s request. Most lessons done on LEA days are confined to the LEA program, and parents are responsible for lessons completed at home. There are a few assignments given for completion at home:
    • Form 1 (1st-3rd grade):
      • Bible–students are assigned a New Testament reading for one of their home lesson times. The second New Testament reading is completed on Thursday at LEA.
    • Form 2 (4th-6th grade):
      • Science-students are assigned a reading for one of their home lesson times. A corresponding discussion/experiment is completed on Tuesdays at LEA.
      • Grammar–a home grammar lesson is given to continue working with the concept/idea introduced in class on Tuesday.
      • Bible–students are assigned a NT reading for one of their home lesson times. The second NT reading is completed on Thursday at LEA.
  • Our Middle School (7th and 8th grade) and High School (9th-12th grade) programs require attendance both days of the week. For LEA subjects, there is an expectation that students are following a schedule to complete home lessons provided by teachers.
    • Middle school classes begin to ease students into the process of learning how to manage assignments given by their teacher, showing those assignments to their teachers, and completing work that progresses from both their home and LEA lessons.
      • Literature–assigned novel readings are done at home following a suggested schedule. Discussion and written work is completed at LEA.
      • Science–students are assigned two readings for their home lesson times. A corresponding discussion/experiment is completed at LEA.
      • Grammar–a home grammar lesson is given to continue working with the concept/idea introduced in class.
      • Spanish–1-2 home lessons are provided to continue learning the language.
      • 7th grade math–a short (~20 min) lesson is sent home to practice concepts or ideas that have been introduced in class. This work should be added onto one of the home arithmetic lessons.
      • 8th grade math–students begin their study of high school algebra and geometry. One  home lesson for each is given for students to continue their math learning at home.
  • High school classes require students to complete home lessons and submit them using our online platform (Canvas). By completing lessons at LEA and at home, students have the opportunity to earn multiple high school credits.
    • Literature–assigned novel, mythology, and Shakespeare readings are done at home following a suggested schedule. Discussion and written work is completed at LEA.
    • Composition–writing assignments are often sent home toward the end of the term to be finished and turned in at the end of the term. (Combined with Literature for 1 credit earned per year)
    • Science–students are assigned two readings for their home lesson times. A corresponding discussion/experiment is completed at LEA. (Courses are spread over three years of high school with the opportunity to earn 3 science credits–Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics)
    • Grammar (9th and 10th grade)–a home grammar lesson is given to continue working with the concept/idea introduced in class.
    • Spanish–1-2 home lessons are provided to continue learning the language. (1 credit earned per year)
    • Math–2-3 (depending on the math class) lessons are assigned for completion at home. (Option to earn Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 credit)
    • Electives–elective offerings are provided each year with varying workloads. Offerings have included Latin, Brush Drawing, PE/Folk Dancing, Bible, Personal Finance, Health. These courses are offered based on teacher and schedule availability.
  • In addition to these courses, students also complete coursework that is contained solely at LEA, but that can earn a credit: Biology/Anatomy (1 credit), Citizenship/Plutarch/Government/Economics (1-2 Social Studies credits)
  • Teachers give feedback and evaluations for the LEA portion of work, and parents give a grade for the home portion of work. Reporting grades and filling out transcripts is done by the parent.

Location

We meet in Johnson City, TN.

State Requirements

Each participating family will need to register with an umbrella school or local school district in order to meet TN homeschooling requirements.

We provide portions of the instruction for courses in High School, but work must be completed at home under the direction of the parent to receive full credit for coursework. Teachers provide evaluations and suggested grade for the portion of work completed at LEA. Parents are responsible for grading the at home portions of lessons and for all reporting.
